I thought I was going to be late for the luncheon in at the Apple headquarters, but I was early. I must have missed the bulk of traffic, which must’ve sucked for the rest of the office who hadn’t left already. I was really excited to meet all the other business executives from the different companies. This was the kind of pressure I thrived in. Luckily for me it seemed like the other business executives were mainly men so I wouldn’t have to put up with women.
“Hey,” I said sitting down next to some guy who looked vaguely familiar, “Do I know you?”
He looked up at me with a tilted head and said, “I don’t think so, but I’m Landon.”
“Nice to meet you,” I said, “Do you mind if I sit here?”
“Be my guest,” he said with a shrug, “What’s your name?”
“Sorry,” I said taking my seat, “I’m India.”
“Nice to meet you, India,” he said with a smile.
Before I could continue the conversation I saw Lian walk in and make her way toward us. I rolled my eyes and immediately a bad mood overcame me. She came directly up to Landon and kissed him on the cheek.
“I see you’ve met my lovely co-worker, India Sage,” Lian said with a fake smile. Landon turned to me and then back to India. He definitely felt the tension between us.
“You never mentioned you had a boyfriend, Lian. I thought you were in a committed relationship with Belvedere,” I said with a defiant attitude in my voice.
“Only on weekends,” Lian said with a stupid grin on her face.
“Who was the blonde guy you were all over at Cross then?” I asked looking down at my nails, not really interested.
“Perry,” she said simply. I cringed at the thought of another guy who would be stupid enough to be with her. Then I realized that if the guys were that stupid they deserved each other. She continued to talk to Landon, but I ignored her.
“India!” Talia said sitting next to me.
I sighed and said, “Hi, Talia.”
“So this is great!” she said, “It’s so fascinating to see different people from these world companies. Don’t you find it exciting?”
“Sure, Talia,” I said passive aggressively.
“So, I have this idea for the timeline-“ Talia began, but I cut her off.
“Listen, Talia, I’m sure your idea is wonderful and it’ll make everything so much better, but I really don’t want to hear about it,” I said bluntly. It was true.
“Geez, India,” Talia said, “This is why you have no friends.”
“Talia, I have friends, it’s just that I prefer to keep business and pleasure separate,” I said snidely.
I felt a tap on my shoulder and I turned around expecting some other idiot from the office, but it wasn’t. in fact, it was someone who I thought I’d never see again.
“India, right?” Will, from the bar, said.
“Yeah,” I said taken completely by surprise, “Will, right? What are you doing here?”
“I work for Apple, finance executive,” he said with a smile, “And what about you?”
“I work for facebook,” I said pleased at his choice of career, “Business executive.”
“Facebook, wow!” Will said, clearly impressed, “very nice, and I thought I’d never see you again.”
I raised my eyebrow and said, “Same.” And with that I turned around and faced the speaker. Maybe California wasn’t the hell-hole I pegged it to be.
